How to know if your shingle roof is damaged

Knowing when it’s time to replace your roof might be a little complicated when you can’t see the top or the outside of your roof. Here are some tips on how to know when it might be time to repair or replace your shingle roof.

  1. Shingles are meant to lay flat on your roof. If they are curled, cracked, or absent, then it might be an indication that the shingles are close to the end of their lifespan and need to be replaced. If you have suspicions that this might be the case, call the experts for a consultation.
  2. Since water runs downhill on roofs, if you notice that your shingles are dark, wet, or dirty, then it could be a sign that water or moisture is getting trapped underneath the shingles and that means that your roof most likely needs to be replaced.
  3. Another area that you can check is the gutters. Shingles are usually made out of mineral fiber and cementitious fillers, those granules can often find their way into your gutters. They usually look like coarse black sand.
  4. Take into consideration how old is your roof. Asphalt shingles tend to last between 10 to 20 years in Florida. The installation of the roof is also important if the old roof was removed, if it’s properly ventilated, if it was installed over another or several layers, or if it’s older than 20 years. These are all signs that you might need a new roof.
